FAQs
How do we set the calendar function on SFE for job search.
Update on "new" callout system that does not allow requests, is it staying?
How the new "no more requests" rule will affect TOCs who have in the past worked more steadily as a TOC?
Seniority in sd8.
Why does HR continually hire outside of district when current employees are applying.
Why doesn't sd8 hire more internally when there are experienced teachers already here.
My question or concerns are around the call out. What's normal amount by this time? I was only called on one day and spend up to six hours daily waiting.
Is there no way to have a compromise between (telephone) calls and going on the computer SFE? Perhaps at a time that doesn't interfere with TTOC (ie. 3:30-5pm)
As well, how can I view my teachables in settings? I'm wondering if I can go in and edit if they don't include all of my teachables.
When is seniority ported? I moved from a District where I had 20+ years experience last year.
I’m interested in knowing if the union will be pushing for teachers to be able to request TTOC’s again. This is pretty important to me as it was how I got about half of my shift calls previously. It has negatively impacted how often and where I teach now. I would like this pushed back on. I also know that there are a lot of teachers that want to be able to request TTOC’s. Thanks
- I will inquire about this.
Update on "new" callout system that does not allow requests, is it staying?
- At this point, we are not sure. The district took this function away as they were putting CUPE employees into SFE as well and the CUPE collective agreement does not allow for requests. The district has now separated us into two separate groups within SFE so there might be a possibility to revisit this.
How the new "no more requests" rule will affect TOCs who have in the past worked more steadily as a TOC?
- Teachers may still go to their admin and ask them to make the request within SFE. So in this sense, requests can still happen, although they may not happen as frequently as before.
- The rotational call out should make it more equitable for everyone.
Seniority in sd8.
- Seniority does not kick in until you have a continuing contract. Once you have a contract, you will be put on the seniority list and all your experience credit within the district (or another) will be added to your seniority.
Why does HR continually hire outside of district when current employees are applying.
- I am working with the district to try to change that practice. It is happening less than it previously did. Sometimes, however, there may not be any qualified candidates for a position amongst SD8 employees, for example, not so long ago, we had a couple of our music/band teachers retire. The district had to hire externally to find someone qualified for the position.
Why doesn't sd8 hire more internally when there are experienced teachers already here.
- It has taken awhile, but we now have an understanding that the district makes an effort to hire SD8 employees prior to external candidates during the school year. The school district maintains that TTOCs and term teachers are not technically employees over the summer and during that time, they may look externally.
My question or concerns are around the call out. What's normal amount by this time? I was only called on one day and spend up to six hours daily waiting.
- Generally, September is a slow month for call out. Teachers have just had a long vacation and are relatively healthy. As we move into the fall and winter, you will find that call outs increase and some days we don’t have enough TTOCs. As we move into the year, not only will there be absences due to illness, but both the district and the union sometimes hold events that require TTOCs. There will also be term assignments that pop up due to medical leaves, partial medical leaves, maternity and parental leaves, compassionate care leave, etc.
Is there no way to have a compromise between (telephone) calls and going on the computer SFE? Perhaps at a time that doesn't interfere with TTOC (ie. 3:30-5pm)
- That is something that will need to be explored. At this time, it is not available.
As well, how can I view my teachables in settings? I'm wondering if I can go in and edit if they don't include all of my teachables.
- I’m not sure, but will ask.
When is seniority ported? I moved from a District where I had 20+ years experience last year.
- As soon as you get a continuing contract, you can import up to 20 years of seniority. You should, however, be able to import your experience credit immediately. That will make a difference on your daily rate of pay.

- This is an ongoing issue that the union is working on. At present, senior management is not interested in this option for a variety of reasons, however, the conversation is ongoing.
